Brothers Mark and Bobby Wallace are both Elgin winemakers, the former previously at Oneiric, and the latter assistant at Iona and Off the Record Chenin Blanc 2018 is the outcome of an “after-hours project.” Not knowing how the wine would turn out, or whether their bosses would approve, they kept the project under wraps and hence the name.

This white Bordeaux blend (65% Sauvignon Blanc / 35% Semillon) named the Century immediately draws the eye with its clear, brilliant light yellow colour still tinged with green. The wine leads with inviting aromas of pear drops, mango, fennel and ripe figs with a subtle touch of waxy lanolin imparted by the inclusion of Semillon. “Wow factor” entry onto the palate where luxurious sun-ripened golden delicious apples and quince inter-twine with an oyster shell mineral core, a generous creaminess and harmonious acidity. A satisfying wine, displaying textured layers of fruit which linger indulgently. Whilst this wine drinks extremely well now it is expected to develop even greater complexity with further maturation. The Century 2016 achieves both elegance and boldness making it a worthy pairing with fresh oysters, pan seared kingklip with a creamy walnut cheese sauce, pulled lemon and herb chicken, asparagus in a rich béarnaise sauce or crisply roasted duck.

The golden yellow of the Chalcopyrite, a copper sulphide ore, sets off the warm glow of the Oneiric Chardonnay. Elgin is perfect for growing Chardonnay. This grape varietal is known for its natural acidity and ageing potential. A Burgundian at heart, this chardonnay boasts beautiful lime, turkish delight, crème brûlée and a light citrus pith. Delicious nuttiness and aromas of butterscotch and fine oak.
Steely minerality indicative of the terroir, with 8 months in 100% New French oak.
